What topic to choose in computer science

Posted 19 September 2012 - 03:19 PM

Hi could someone please help, as i am currently studying computer science at uni and i have to choose either web and mobile development or advanced programming. I am not sure which one of the topics to pick. In web and mobile they teach us jsp in the first term and in the second term we learn android development. In advanced programming we learn advanced concepts of java.
if anyone could give me some pointers etc, as to what would be more beneficial for me to study. Thanks

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

We don't really have a clear understanding of the difficulty of the material in the course. If you have a clear interest in one, pick that one. Your adviser can better help you gauge which courses will better prepare you as a programmer. You should consult with him or her.

Android and Java EE are in high demand. I would suggest you make sure your Java skills are solid before attempting Java EE, though.

Keep in mind as well that these technologies may be outdated in a few years. So it's more important to make sure you know the fundamentals of programming so you can pick up new languages later in life.

Over the next several years there is expected to be a drastic increase in mobile usage as smartphones and tablets overtake computers as the most used devices to access the internet making mobile developing an extremely useful skill to have.

I would say go with advance programming. Once you know all the basics of java, from simple to more advance concepts, you should then be able to teach yourself jsp and android development. From the sounds of it, you dont seem you have a lot of java knowledge yet, so I am quite surprised they are starting you on something like jsp. I personally dont think they should be letting you dive into something like that without atleast the foundations of java.
