Interesting article and I sure felt good about myself after reading it, but if everybody [online] is special then no one is. Statistically there has to be at least one guy who has all kinds of side projects, reads all the books, and still sucks. I'd be curious to know what the bias is in this information set.

There is something to be said to being a student of your profession though and aside from the "pulled out of your ass" percentages, the assertion is spot on.

I found the article a little misguided myself. Besides the percentage issue you pointed out, it had an underlying hint of ranting and some huge assumptions (in the case of VB6 vs VB.NET). I think the overall goal of the article was to say that we (those active in communities) get the others involved just to make sure the programming industry gets healthier. However, the point assumes that the 10% are not doing that.

The fact is, there are plenty of people out there teaching others and I know of plenty of places to learn online and in the work place. The issue is that the 90% out there are are in programming for other reasons... money, career advancement, necessity. They don't care to learn more. They are simply not passionate. That is alright... every other industry out there is like that too... well except maybe teachers.

I get the point of the article... too bad that 90% who don't read blogs will never read that blog. Even if they did, they wouldn't care. Now if we disabled copying and pasting, they might become a little more caring.

I have worked with many developers and engineers that have NO interest in learning outside the workplace, and a lot of them have been great. However I think we probably have more fun then them, because we love what we do, and being paid well to do something you would already do in your spare time, is AWESOME.

On the flip side, I've noticed that developers who have social lives and don't spend 24/7 coding, are easier to get along with in teams, and probably have a better sense of perspective. But that's not always the case

That's cos they'll have better social skills, than the 24/7 coder.

I can understand this, I suppose. People doing things outside of work are bound to know more than those that just do their work and go home.

I'm personally pretty amazed at how incompetent a large number of the people in our profession are. This incompetence is the main reason that half the projects that get started never make it to production. I don't get it.
