AnalyticLunatic, isn't that pic a little harsh? I'm pretty sure I read that that dude is an injured Army vet, and was just able to walk again or something.

I know nothing of the back story of the photo, it is simply an image a friend sent me one day as a joke when I was sick and couldn't make leg day. I will edit my previous post in any case, I wish no disrespect to our Troops ^^

@strawhat - If that's the route you're going, you need to do a lot of research. If you don't know how to punch, you'll break a wrist, hurt a shoulder, probably both. I don't know where you live, but just about everywhere with more than 100,000 people has fighters, and those fighters work out somewhere. Try to find that place. The workout is more than just punching, it's the structure and drive, and group misery that pushes you through.

Thanks for the heads up. I live in Bangalore, India. We have karate, judo and I think amateur wrestling classes, but I am yet to find a boxing one. I have heard of some illegal fighting places, perhaps I could ask the fighters where they train. I'm not sure that's wise though, I may not be up to their training regime. :) What I need is a gym with a trainer. Gotta keep searching.

To get started you'll need 16oz or 18oz gloves, and the longest hand wraps you can find (mine are 180 inches, or ~457 cm). There are plenty of youtube videos on how to wrap your hands/wrists, so that shouldn't be a problem. Once you get the idea, just try stuff until you settle into a specific way of doing it. A lot of the videos will have you focus on your knuckles, but you should worry more about your wrists when you're starting out. But you really need a trainer to teach you how to punch correctly. Throwing 4 wrong punches probably won't hurt you, but 300 will, especially the last ones when you're exhausted.

Wow.. Sounds like there is a lot of precautions involved in boxing. What I do right now is punch the wall like for 100 times with each hand. I dont use gloves or wraps or anything.

It's really not that bad, I just try to stress it because I'd hate to see someone injure something and have to quit for a month after one or two sessions. It takes a while to build up the wrist strength for that many punches. My coach told me that when he really thrashes me, I'm throwing over 300 punches in the 3 minutes I'm in the ring. That's not including 9 minutes of bag work. I've had wrist injuries in the past, so mine tend to be a little weak anyway, but everyone I talk to at my gym has said that for the first 4-6 weeks, their wrists hurt constantly. I don't know about punching the wall, I guess you have to do what you have to do. You need to really make sure that your wrists aren't bent on impact. And wraps would be a really good idea regardless of what you're punching.

Yeah. I make sure my wrists dont bend. I have week ankles already, I dont want weak wrists on top of it! Better look for a pair of wraps I guess. Right now, my wrists get all red and hurt like a bitch for an hour so after the workout.

They are mostly piddly-ass places. There are some kick boxing places that have some good reviews. I'm planning on checking them out this weekend.

Not to derail the boxing discussion, but I'm totally Urkel-ing it today. My ankle-length skirt has become a mid-calf-length skirt because I have to tuck it into my bra to keep it from falling down. And my Mr. Rogers-style zip-front cardigan is so big it makes me look homeless. Totally not complaining. One day I will be hot again! One day I will be more curves and less lumps! One day, people will touch my ass not because it's in the way, but because they can't control themselves! One day I shall be known as SuperMILF!

That's awesome!

Though for some reason I read that in LSP's voice. I probably need my first hit of coffee in eight years.

I have taken up biking to work (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday), biking to university (most Fridays), and playing volleyball on Fridays.

So far I am up 2 pounds, which I believe is muscle weight given that I haven't changed my eating habits. It may turn out to be a cold winter, but that should increase the number of calories lost, right?

So... I hurt my arm or something. After barbell incline presses I noticed my upper arm felt a little weird. And now it hurts where the top of the Brachialis is whenever that muscle is used.
