custom fly-out menu

I am creating a website and I have no real web design training, only what I have learned on my own. I want to create a custom fly-out menu. The idea is that when someone hovers the mouse over an image, a nice custom menu that I have designed pops-up, rather than the basic fly-out menu. I was thinking the menu I have designed could be a links/image map, but I really don't know if this is possible.

Picture instead of the standard, boring, rectangular fly-outs, a nice spherical looking menu interface.

Is there a question to go with this? Or you just wanted to let us know you have a cool idea for a spherical menu?
