I'm not willing to lay the blame 100% at the feet of religion. While I will readily agree that misogyny is definitely ingrained into the Abrahamic religions, I don't think it's the cause of the extreme-ness of this example. There are other Islamic countries that don't go to the same lengths as Saudi Arabia does to oppress their women. Turkey is a good example, but honestly, most of them aren't as bad.

It's a combination of religion and culture that's culminated in a really shitty place for women to live, or even visit. And it's really sickening that they're one of our (America's) strongest middle-eastern allies. Our government is extremely friendly with theirs, while calling other governments in the region "extremist", even when they're better than S.A. Political expedience.

Nope, the religion is not to be blamed as much as the people. After all, SA is not the only country where Islam is practiced. Even in my country, there are many people who follow Islam, and yet there is no such non-sense. In fact, it is the opposite - there have been many muslim girls, showing off their bodies on TV. So, IMO, the country is to be blamed more.

Here's a few fun facts:

A buddy of mine was a medic in the Air Force in the 90s. He spent a bit of time in Germany, and was there shortly after the Kobar Towers were bombed. There was a strip club they used to hit up, and one night when they went the back of the club was curtained off. They trying to figure out why, and eventually found out that there were Saudi princes in back, and the manager didn't want our military guys to see them back there and cause a scene.

The Iraqi Army guys I worked with were obsessed with porn. They used to come pester us at all hours of the night, trying to get us to show them more porn, as long as it wasn't girl-on-girl: that shit pissed them off. Too bad we didn't have any porn with goats for them...
