Well you aren't completely out of line but if at the same time you feel under appreciated and underpaid at your current job, there's no reason why you shouldn't be looking around elsewhere and moving on.
It might even allow you to work a little better when you're not thinking about bills all the time.

That's strange, must be a US thing. Here in Bolivia and most other places in Europe sharing your salary is considered normal. The more transparency the more level playing field there is for employees against their employers.

- breach of contracts
- it's unethical
- broken hearts due to realizing your friends get higher pay than you(varies in people, depending if you're the envious type)
- fights inside the company where one learns that a new hire was offered a higher pay than yours and the company will not do anything about it
I partially agree with Lemur, but please do bear in mind that some of us aren't privileged and support families so that we often shoot for the highest we can get. Yep, using "we" there.
But! I agree with Lemur because if you love doing something, then more often than not you'll get to be good at it, that will translate to more companies hiring you with higher offers.

It's unethical since it can cause grief to any party involve in the questioning, as they said above, it's rude.
