Saw this yesterday and thought you guys would enjoy it seeing that it involves a theme close to some of our hearts.



Who knows, maybe even modi123_1 will enjoy it. Even if it is OSU's marching band

Anyone know how much time they spent rehearsing this? I know this is what they practice to be good at but I just find it remarkable that it appears as flawless as it does.

I am, by penalty (of an extreme nature), obligated to avoid most and if not all conversations about that particular "game" and by extension only allow a non-assertive grunt when asked to comment about it or my proffer analysis of said sports contest.

As it is I did see on some new site's comment section someone pointing out Cal did this back in 2007... well a similar routine.

I WANT TO BE IN THIS BAND SO BAAAAAADDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm seriously going to buy a trombone if I get into OSU (I'm trying to transfer btw) and get lessons so I can try out this summer.


Also. when I worked there in the stadium on Thursday, I saw them painting those flags/props (the M flag, the cherries, etc.) and heard the band members practice. The band was scattered doing sectionals, but I got a clear view of one of the sousaphone players in the stairwell. I did take pics (not of the sousaphone) but haven't gotten around to uploading them yet. And the facilities operations manager said he'd get me into the press boxes to take pics, but he never got around to it.

As a veteran marching band geek who was train in military style marching.... ewwwww highstep!

As a former member of Western Carolina University's Pride of the Mountains marching band... can't hear 'em.

As a spectator... that was pretty awesome!

I'm asking because Marine non-commissioned officers go to NCO schools, and part of those schools is learning to lead close-order drill. We all learned to march in recruit training (if you want to see some precision drill, you should see 3rd phase recruits preparing for their final drill competition), but recruits drill differently than fleet Marines (it's more of a high step in recruit training, to create as much "thunder" as possible), and the silent drill team uses yet another step.

Most of the movements made by marching bands would be considered non-standard in military close-order drill, but to accomplish them we would use something very similar to what Irohuro called "highstep". I assume you use pivots for true turns, but close-order drill doesn't really have a parallel for "swirling movements with everyone facing the same direction". How do you execute sideways and diagonal steps? Also, I wouldn't think the marching band does hard pivots for stationary facing movements (simple turns in-place): do you march in place when you turn? I guess I should have been more specific...

Depends on set and how it's supposed to look. There are counted turns in marching band as well as the gradual-turning-while-mark-timing move and others. Source: I'm a 6 year marching band, 4 year AFJROTC/Drill Team, and 2 year AFROTC vet.

My apologies, I seem to have mixed up military style and corps style, though technically my high school used a combination of military style and corps style.

that's what i get for posting before my morning pick-me-up, heh.

The way i marched in high school was we did pick up our feet, however not exaggeratedly, only enough to not trip during fast tempos, torso always faced the front, except for follow-the-leaders, and when facing back field to reduce sound for features.

standard step size is 8-to-5, and you alway ALWAYS started on the left foot, of course during actual marching you would change step size to hit your positions in the form.
