Stratos Jump...

Posted 08 October 2012 - 11:07 PM

http://www.redbullstratos.com/live/

The jump was pushed back until this Tuesday morning. About 7.30CST or so.

Quote

Supported by a team of experts Felix Baumgartner plans to ascend to 120,000 feet in a stratospheric balloon and make a freefall jump rushing toward earth at supersonic speeds before parachuting to the ground. His attempt to dare atmospheric limits holds the potential to provide valuable medical and scientific research data for future pioneers.

Wow. This is a recipe for disaster. Hope everything works out fine though.

Also when they said "future pioneers" did they mean "future space settler pioneers" and this will be the method for people to enter the surface of another planet? Awesome.

I'm sorry, but this dude is basically just filming his death. Every previous attempt by people to break the height, speed, ect records ended in death. The average freefall is around 115mph, and from the article he will be going ~690mph. I would think the sudden jolt from his parachute opening would be enough to kill him at that speed.

I think the guy just wants to commit suicide, but since it wouldn't let him into heaven, he's trying to trick God into thinking it's an accident.

it's currently on weather hold until at least 8:00am MDT. If this were me i'd probably take this as a sign that I'm crazy for even thinking of doing it.

Wind resistance means he'll probably reach his top speed (600) using artificial means, then slow down naturally to his actual top speed. He probably won't open his parachute until his speed stabalizes to his natural top speed.

I don't pretend to understand Physics, but It would be interesting to try and figure out exactly how fast he'd be going when he hits 5500 feet or 2000 feet.

And now it is saying next update in an hour, with the earliest possible launch now 3 hours away. Ah well, at least I'll be home from work by then and might be able to watch it on a reliable PC.
