i could nt understand this....why f as folderitem

The As FolderItem of the parameter, say what the type of argument passed in the method must be (or derived from)

Dim x As Integer is reserving space for an integer to fit in, the reference to is assigned to the variable x
Dim s As New DateTime(2012,10,09) is creating a new instance of type DateTime and storing in the space referred to a s

vb6 doesn't have a DateTime object...
