I'm new to this and looking for some advice.

I've read this tutorial and what I'd like to do is find a server somewhere to put the server side of that type of application.

I have used PHP and similar to make small personal websites but I'm looking more for a server which Windows applications can connect to for non real-time small time chatting/gaming etc.

So:

• What kind of server do I need?
  
• What security issues should I be aware of?
  
• Anything else I should know or look at?

"find" a sever that is going to somehow know how to what you need for your application?

The tutorial you reference is for WRITING your own server app. That's what you'll need to do in order to have it match your needs.

My apologies for not being clear.
The coding I can do. I'm looking for somewhere to put the code/application.

Amazon has virtual servers you can spin up for pennies on the usage.. go there. I think there's even a free-for-a-year tier.
