Web Design - Navbar, Content, etc

Posted 12 October 2012 - 04:06 PM

Well I finally got my website up. It works great but there is one problem, the layout sucks! I also don't know what kind of background to use. If it matters, it's a personal site where I can post my programming projects and other stuff. I searched Google and Youtube and I have found not one good tutorial for website layout and design. If I missed one could someone link me to a really good website design tutorial that has a lot of details and examples? I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks.

Also since I have a lot of posts in this section I'll just ask another question here. Using .htaccess is the a way to block access for remote users to look through a directory like domain.com/images or to look at an image by going to domain.com/images/image.jpg? Also could they be redirected to my custom 403 Error Forbidden page?
