I have to create a simple website for school and my professor said there are all kinds of free domain and hosting sites on the web...but where? All the ones I've found have strings attached.

I don't care how many ads there are, or how reliable the server is. I only need it for a week.

I just don't want to pay a penny!

If anyone can make a recommendation, I would be very grateful!!!

First of all, nothing is ever "free". There's always a string or two attached somewhere. Even if it is just ads... it's still something.

Secondly, am I to understand you need both a domain AND a host for this project? Or just hosting space? I have never heard of a school project that required the student to register a domain name.

You should try asking your IT lab at your school to give you some space on the schools website.

You may have to use 3rd party domain names like http://www.kickme.to for the domain name.

I did get a free subdomain from freehosting.com. Right now, it has a pending status. Hopefully I'll be able to upload a couple of pages when the status changes. I've never done anything like this. My professor seems to think there are just loads of ways to throw up a free website online. I've read the "fine print" of several so-called free hosting sites and they all want you to either pay for a domain in order to receive free hosting or pay for hosting when they provide you with a subdomain. I'm hoping this freehosting.com will provide both... still waiting for my subdomain name to be approved.

This is a technical college that I'm going to, and I'm in the website design and Web applications development program there. Interestingly, our school's own website is completely designed and managed by an outside party. My professor, also the head of the CIS department, must be in his 60's, and never actually answers any questions. He's a hell of a nice guy and very, very chatty, just not very helpful. It's frustrating. I only have a few more classes to take for my associates degree though.

Domains are a different ball of ear wax than just providing space. There's ICANN to deal with and so forth for domains.. but with hosting - hell any yahoo with a pc connected to the net can host files.

For a free domain name - you don't have to pay a penny, get a .co.cc domain name HERE. Although at the moment of writing, it does not accept new domain name registrations, I do not know why. You can check at a later time.

Your domain name will appear as yourdomain.co.cc . A catch though is that your domain name will never appear in Google Search results. Google stopped indexing them because spammers use those domain names due to the fact that they are free.

I'd reccommend 000Webhost.
They dont have the greatest uptime but for a project it will be fine. They give you 1500mb per site (you can have unlimited sites), 100gb bandwidth and a free sub domain. They don't put ads on your site either.
