My first serious attempt (CSS/PHP/JavaScript improvement please)

Posted 03 November 2012 - 02:05 AM

I'm a Linux C/C++ developer for a company that does a decent amount of embedded work. Obviously, colors, fonts, and visual design are not my forte. =) That said, I've wanted a pseudo-blog/portfolio website for a long time. WordPress worked for a while, but I've grown tired of it as someone who writes software for a living and changes his own oil even though his car is still under warranty, haha.

So, here's my first attempt at exactly that.

What I would ask of you is two-fold: first, please offer a critique on everything from an engineering and design standpoint. Code structure, layout, readability, aesthetic, etc. Second, I'd very much like for someone to help me make this CSS more robust in terms of cross browser compatibility.

For reference, here's the lot of it zipped up: http://musasabi.h4xf...o/portfolio.zip

Thanks in advance. =)

First off - not a fan of the left to right gradient. Any good reason it's not top to bottom?
Next - why do you have your headers with a gradient the other way?

The dark flat gray background isn't doing it for me either. Throw some texture in there!

What's the design choice on having the width be 600px? It is okay to go up to 900px now a days.

Outside of that.. eh. It's nothing snazzy nor does it have a complex look and feel.

The gradients were an accident that I wound up liking the look of. I also opposed them for left/right balance, as well as utilized light article headings for that purpose further down the page. I'm not sure if it accomplishes the task, but that's what I was going for.

In terms of nothing fancy or complex and textures, I was indeed going for a minimalist look and feel. I wanted to do something visually pleasant without using any images at all. CSS and Javascript only, if I could help it. =)

I chose 600px because I find narrower bodies of text much easier to read. It might be a waste of space with 16:9 displays on everything, but I still prefer narrower bodies to wider ones.

I don't mean to sound argumentative if I do, just giving my decidedly uneducated aesthetic reasoning. All feedback is welcome. =D

Well there's minimalist that looks right and minimalist that doesn't. If that's the look and feel you want - by all means rock it out... though I am going to tell you I don't enjoy the hodgepodge of gradients, the coloring, or the size... but what evs.
