Oops, to the @op, sorry for derailing the subject. However it's a known problem. If the spam filters were actually removed, you wouldn't believe the amount of spam that actually comes in. We have seen an increase & decrease in the amounts of spam posts, & almost all of them originate in the introduce yourself sub forum.

Thought there are some ideas being bounced around between the moderation team, I feel we do a good job of closing & removing the spam forum topics.

There was a point in time where the SEO and Advertising forum was not set to read-only. We changed the permissions to read only because it became a forum solely for "SEO and Advertising" for spammers.

I don't know if this suggestion would work but I think it is worth a try.

Whenever the site detects any spammer, it should display the following message to him.

"Hello, I see that you are trying to spam the forum with your knowledge and skills. If you use half of that knowledge to help people on this forum with their queries, you will actually be utilizing your knowledge in a productive way."

That will probably deter unnecessary spamming :)

regards,
Raghav

You do understand that a lot of these spammers aren't actual people, right?

... and for them the "productive way" typically is paved with money. Be it dollars, ruples, rupees, or boliviano.

In some cases they aren't. In third world countries like India and the Philippines, people are paid pennies per day to spam sites like us.

Worst. Job. Ever.

If they do really good, though, they can get to work at a gold farm.

Yes, but aren't they the ones who create spamming code? I mean to say, someone has written an automated program for spamming. That does the dirty work for them.

Yep, this is true. Some of my batch mates took an internship doing this kind of stuff.

From what I heard, it is a tedious job.

I don't believe someone who wrote the spam code will actually see the message you've set up for them. They're busy spamming lots of sites. There's even a chance they'll think if you send them an email, it's spam too.

What do spammers eat for breakfast?

...

Nah.

More or less they just get paid to type in captchas.

I'm now tempted to set up a forum and have the most difficult registration process ever. Just to see who signs up.

If said process ends with naked pictures of the Men of DIC, I'm totally there.
