VB5 under windows7

can I install VB5 (I know, its ancient) under windows7? I have tried and the editor comes up, but none of the forms appear in the project window

Are you running vb5 in 'admin mode'? Have you tried 'XP Comparability'?

Right click -> 'Run as administrator' or Right Click -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Run in compatibility mode for: Win XP

In all seriousness, maybe software development is off a bit for you if you do not yet grasp computer usage fundamentals.

have been programming for 30 years, tho not on a pc IBM big iron

Granted, but if you don't have knowledge of general usage of (whatever), how can you create tools for (whatever)?

Case in point, this isn't even a question for Visual Basic, because it isn't a question of Visual Basic code. It belongs under computer support because you are asking about compatibilities of the software & the operating system.
