Since this was brought up in the initial post I want to toss this out there...
Endless Space is an AMAZING game. Not EVE style, though. It's a 4X (exploit, explore, expand, exterminate) style game in the vein of Master of Orion 2 (other 4X games are Civilization, Sins of a Solar Empire). It is, imo, what MOO3 should have been. I actually jumped on board while the game was in beta and contributed feedback on balance and features. Another worthwhile note of the game is that it's an indie developer, and the team is VERY responsive to customer feedback. They regularly hold polls to find out which feature people want to see next. A lot of the races are player designed. And did I mention it's fun as? I can't recommend it enough if you like strategy games. It is turn-based like MOO or Civ, rather than Real Time like SSE.
Anyway...
I'm anxious to see what I find this year on the sale. Last year I picked up the Square bundle of games for $70 and a whole bunch of indie games. Another one well worth grabbing (I picked this up 2 years ago) is VVVVVV - an indie platformer with fun and simple gameplay, and awesome music. Here's a Flash Demo: http://www.kongregat...agh/vvvvvv-demo
other recommendations:
Recettear: an Item Shop's Tale - Capitalism sim with RPG setting and elements)
Eufloria (mentioned earlier) - Tower Assault style game
World of Goo (also mentioned earlier) - Physics Bridge Builder...ish
Cthulhu Saves the World and Breath of Death VII - old-school SNES style RPGs with awesome humor
Each of the above has been on sale for under $3 at some point this year. I paid $1 for Cthulhu and BOD7 together.
Counterstrike: Source - Source is best Camperstrike. I'm not overly impressed with Global Offensive
Defense Grid: Awakening - great full-blown tower defense game

Skyrim's 30 bucks... and the Farming Simulator 2013 is a steal at $15.
A little underwhelmed. Maybe I confused this with the winter sale in a month or so.

Hotline Miami changed my opinion on indie games. It's fantastic.

Starcraft II looks interesting... but I'll probably wait until the second part comes out in March 12, 2013.

I can't do Blizzard games any more. I made the mistake of buying Diablo 3 and was promptly reminded of why I quit WOW in Burning Crusade (too simplistic and easy). Diablo 2, old Warcraft and Warcraft 2, ya I can do those...old Starcraft even.
But I'm a Command & Conquer guy.

I actually disliked the new starcraft. I wouldn't have paid the full price if I had known how it'd have been.
Campaign was alright and all, but it's basically just about the achievements which I've slowly outgrown.
Multiplayer was lackluster, I prefered Starcraft 1 over 2.
I quit WoW in WoTLK. Best decision of my life.

@ modi123_1: I play Starcraft 2 quite a lot and definitely recommend it. It is a great strategy game and if you liked Starcraft 1, you should like Starcraft 2 although the gameplay is not as fast paced which many actually enjoy. Now to find me a good game to buy from the steam sale

Cthulhu Saves the World was $1 last night. Totally worth it.
VVVVVV I can't recommend enough. I have hundreds of hours logged in that game and it's so simple, yet so so fun.
