Hi,
I want to try out an SQLserver Express database (replacing an Access database). Is the version (SQLserver Express 2005 / 2008 etc.) important. I have version 2005 & I'd like to try it out on a website. do i need to check with the hosting site. Does this issue need to be taken care of whenever we make a project using SQLserver Express database. Is there something like backward/forward compatibility wherein one version would work with all sites irrespective of the version supported by the site. For example, if a site says that it provides version 2008, then it would automatically support 2005. or the other way round.

I'm really not sure of the technicalities. I installed SQLServer 2008 on my web server, and soon moved over to 2012 R2. My database didn't change, but it still worked the same no problem. Actually with the 2012 R2 I had no problems.. 2008 wouldn't work with my windows server 2003 for some reason.

Outside of a small number of commands being depreciated - no, your TSQL statements should not be affected by various versions of MSSQL.
