Let me clarify what I meant.

I don't like the current state of dubstep. Like I've said, I feel like it's oversaturated with hopeful artist who think they'll make a quick buck jumping on the latest bandwagon.

When I said that those other older artists that did it for the music were still good. I still listen to those people and I still enjoy the genre.

Christmas.

I mean, as a kid, who doesn't love the idea of a cherubic omniscient cat burglar giving you stuff just because he wasn't sharp enough to catch all the bad stuff you did? As an adult, this time of year is a super smarmy, simpering songed, salesgasm that evokes more homicidal will than good will toward men.

Some of it is simply getting old. When my wife and I see an angsty, earnest teen in the goth/emo/whatever dejure, we do our best not to chuckle in front of them. Been there, done that, didn't by the t-shirt.

I will occasionally listen to classic rock stations. I like classic rock. However, they are oldies stations now. There is a kind of desperate irrelevance they exude that is depressing.

Our family photos of Christmas time was always dad had his coffee, I had a bowl of cereal, & our facial expressions told the story that we'd rather be else where. It was always Mom that loved Christmas morning. After age 8 the entire thing felt like hassle & false obligation for me. Even back then I knew it was better to give to those that needed, & not myself. Thanksgiving has always meant more to me than Christmas. Thanksgiving is the time for uber family gathering

I used to have a thing for country music, way back when I was 14-15. One day, I turned on country music and couldn't stand it. It was too whiny for me, hence why I probably enjoyed it at that age.

Turkey also gets old quickly after Thanksgiving. As much as I love Thanksgiving, (essentially) leftovers once a week is overdose.

I hate the idea of Santa as a parent. My wife and I killed all of the mythical home invasion creatures in one fell swoop, starting with the easter bunny, when I asked my kids if they really thought a giant rabbit could break into our house, wander around hiding things, and not get shot by dad. The others started dropping like flies after that. Really, we just hated Santa because we were broke, and some made-up fatass got credit for most of the few presents we could afford to buy, while their biological fathers' family got to team up and buy a bunch of good stuff and get credit for it all. We got to listen to how much they loved Santa, and how much they loved Christmas with the "other" family, but we just looked lazy and broke. Petty? Yes. Do I give a shit? Nope.

They are brilliant girls, actually.

My 11-year-old is smart enough to pretend she still believes in Santa so she can keep getting extra gifts. Granted, she's not very convincing, but she tries.

This will likely be the last year of innocence for my little one, too. Unless she already knows... in which case, she pretends FAR more convincingly than her sister.
