Java applet in HTML

I have a problem getting a Java applet to work in a HTML site.
I use the following code, which worked some years ago.

<applet archive="piccolo.jar, piccolox.jar, TheTreeMasters.jar" code="theTreeMasters.GUI.GUIMain.class" width=800 height=600></applet>


Does someone know what can be wrong? In IE the size of the applet is shown, but the site is frozen and I can not click on details that could tell more about what is wrong.
In Firefox the applet size is not even shown.
