As if though Microsoft didn't have enough stacking up against them, CEO Tim Cook says the firm will spend $100 million to move production from China.

The company and its manufacturing partner Foxconn Technology Group have faced significant criticism this year over working conditions at the Chinese facilities where Apple products are assembled, prompting Foxconn to raise salaries. Cook didn't say which line of computers would be produced in the U.S. or where in the country they would be made. But he told Bloomberg that the production would include more than just final assembly. That suggests that machining of cases and printing of circuit boards could take place in the U.S.

I doubt if final price will be affected significantly. I expect the gamble is that "Made in the US" will drive enough sales to make up for the lower margin. In addition, this allows them to associate "Made in the US" with the whole Apple brand. Most people aren't paying that much attention, so they hear "Apple will produce one line of one product in the US" and they retain "Apple will produce ... in the US", and Apple gets the flag halo. Doesn't work on everyone, but it'll work on enough to make some difference. Probably also counting on "incentives" from US, state, and local governments, and they'll probably get them.

By a nice coincidence I read an interesting article in the current Atlantic while I was at lunch. Apparently GE is moving some production back to the US and finding that there are some savings to be had that way. Worth a read, though like anything in the Atlantic, it's to be taken with a grain of salt. They'll contradict it next month.
