I'll throw my hat in the ring here. I'm always one to push reading the book first, and I've almost enjoyed a book over its movie adaption. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the movies too. Movie adaptions can be a great thing; being able to see someone else's interpretation of a great story is a lot of fun.
Also, I usually like to watch movies I don't have to think too hard about. I love reading; that's where I get my intellectual stimulation. Movies are a decompressant for my brain; that's why I like action movies better than any other genre. Book-adaptions fit right in, because I typically know the plot, so I don't have to think about it to keep up.
Now, more directly on topic: I saw The Hobbit on Saturday. I had a great time. I really don't have any complaints. Big deal, there's filler. There's stuff that didn't happen in the book, or stuff that was only hinted at. So what, it's an adaption. It's not a line-for-line reproduction; that would be pointless and bad, because books can tell you things that movies can't. I had a lot of fun watching it, and that was what's important.

i've actually been pretty surprised by the amount of people who never read the hobbit. i never expected most people to read lotr, but i just figured the hobbit was one of those books just about everyone had picked up at some point.

If they haven't, they should. LotR is pretty dense, so I could totally understand not having read through it. But The Hobbit is a really easy and rewarding read.

Hmm.. I have read LotR but not The Hobbit though I'm pretty sure I have a copy lying around somewhere. But now I'm afraid to read it before the next two movies come out in case I hate 'em!

Seriously, don't avoid a book for the sake of a movie. And if you do, don't admit to it.

'Twas a joke son, a joke. I'm planning on reading it as soon as I finish up the series I'm currently reading. (Shadow of the Apt if anybody cares)
