2012 Year end review!

Post icon  Posted 17 December 2012 - 11:54 AM

2012 - it's been a hell of a ride. With the short time left of this year it is a good time to reflect on the paths traveled and see how far they deviated from expectation and what surprises we came upon. (Well short time is either four days from now when earth cracks open and a tsunami of chupacabras are unleashed from the bowels of hell or fourteen days from now).

Put on that critical monocle and take a few minutes to examine the highs and lows.

  • How did the year go for you?
  • Did you make any goals you set?
  • What did you learn that was new or exciting in the programming world?
  • How about in the personal life?
  • How have you grown as a person?
  • What did you think was the most overrated game of the year? Under rated? .
  • Would you rank this a good year or bad?
      Scale:
    • -10 = worst year ever
    • 0 = pretty bland year
    • 10 = greatest year ever!

----

For the most part - 2012 was a good year for me. A few too many elder family members that passed on, but I guess that's just a sign of me getting old. Nothing major came down the pipe to rock my finances and I done with my student loans next month (a few years ahead of plan - suck it Feds). The job's been great and still poking around to ratchet up the pay in other places.

I am honestly shocked to see the general populace hasn't worked up their panic or paranoia to a fevered pitch. I was certain by October shit would be in near break down hysteria.

Programming wise it has been a scatter shot of new things I am picking up in a quick fashion.. more javascript and php than I thought I would do, but oh well - gotta play ball when you can.

Overrated games - Diablo3 and the continued COD series..

Goal wise it was good.. Lose'n the lbs with a good motivational fitness thread... various projects tested and a few that went the distance. I wish I gotten further on my robotics and UAV dreams, but that's what I get for not having a solid plan.

Goals for next year - more artsie projects. There's a nebulous idea for a card game, a few video games, and some crazy rubber stamp ideas I would like to see through.

Over all the year is about a +5.

After you get done take a peek at 2011 review.

2012 For myself :

How did the year go for you?
Good. Saw a few concerts of bands perform I thought I wouldn't get a chance to see.
Went through a few technicians at my shop, finally got settled with a good one.
Got my car completed, then did some minor repairs & foo-bar'ed it again.

What did you learn that was new or exciting in the programming world?
Got into JQuery & some more Ajax than 2011.

Would you rank this a good year or bad? I'd go with +8.

The first 5 months of this year were great for me, then things suddenly took a turn towards horrible. My father died twice this year in August and September due to severe COPD. They were able to revive him both times, but he'll never get any better and has a lot of trouble breathing. I guess the only good thing about it is that at least he's not stuck in a hospital. Things with my wife have been going very very bad for a few months now too, and she seems to be finished with our relationship so I've been crashing on the couch at a friends house for a couple of weeks now and I'm not sure if I'll ever get to return home. All things considered, I'd rate this year a -8. At least I did have a few great months this year before everything went sour.

2013 can't come fast enough for me. Hopefully things get MUCH better soon.

The first half of my year plodded along at its standard nothing exciting pace. The second half has been a whirlwind of highs, lows, giddiness and neuroses.

Didn't really set many goals... except maybe for healthy children and managing to hold a job. So, yeah... I met those. Kids are good and I'm still employed. Can't be all bad, right?

I didn't learn much new and exciting in the programming world. Instead, I learned Joomla. I'm gonna go curl into a fetal position in the corner now.

In my personal life, I finally started dating again after a 3-year hiatus. There were good dates, there were bad dates, there were holy fucking shit balls awful dates... there were crushes and infatuations and crushing rejections... but as the year draws to a close, things are definitely looking up. One day at a time.. slow and steady.. never settle for less than something extraordinary.

I've also dropped 2 pant sizes, moved into a gorgeous apartment, and took up smoking again. Can't win them all, I suppose.

Overall, I'd rate this year a +3 with the potential to inch a little higher by New Year's.

Side note - I wanted to add a favorite surprise of this last year was DICTV. A tip of the that to no2pencil and Skaggles for that fun experiment. Sixteen-ish episodes for season 1? Good job on that!

POPULAR

I'd pay money just to see Skaggles beard again.

Overall this year has been AMAZING for me. High school is infinitely better than middle school and I have excelled. My knowledge has grown and wisdom has been acquired. I feel great finishing the transition from small child to teenager. I've also gotten into the freelancing game and now I own my own small business, a fantastic start!

I had previously set goals to lose weight, which I did. I lost about 30 pounds (gained 10 recently) and I'm planning on starting again this news years (right after the holidays and the delicious foods they bring).

Personally life has been a lot happier. It seems like all of those highschool-is-horrible sitcom situations happened in Middle School and Highschool is a good place to actually work on myself.

Grown as a person... Let's just say previous posts are cringe-inducing.

Overall rating: 7

Hmmmm overall fair. Started a job in the new year at a .NET shop so learned allot there. Unfortunately business got slow and the company had to lay me off min November. I wasn't on the bench for long though and had a new job within a couple of weeks. I really like the new workplace, the dev team is awesome.

Health wise I have improved significantly. I go for walks daily and manage to get to the gym 4-5 times a week. Lost 53 pounds since March, over half way to my goal of losing 100!

There were some health scares with my brother, but I am hopeful that he is going to be ok.

I would say +2

This has been a year of firsts, lasts, and many changes. I give it a +6.5

Plus's:
  • Joined D.I.C. :gunsmilie:
  • Graduated as the Outstanding Student of my Program with an Associates of Applied Science in Computer Programming.
  • Many drunken nights with friends.
  • Moved into my own apartment.
  • Began first full-time Developer job.
  • Increased Web-Design business.
  • Started dating after a 2-year hiatus at Tech College.
  • Made several new friends in my new city.
  • Turned 21.
  • Fell in love for the second time.
  • Learned to cook more than just microwavable meals.
  • Began going to the gym and made it 7 months straight before these last few weeks of finals. (Back on schedule today!)
  • Successfully completed a few sessions of College for my Bachelors while working a full-time job.
  • Gambled much, lost little.
  • Karaoke'd for the first time. (Saturday night ^^)

The Downsides:
  • Uncle passed on with several family members probably soon to follow.
  • After permanently staying in the area after Graduation, several friends have proceeded to stop putting any effort in keeping in touch.
  • Girl I was dating around graduation ended the relationship not long after.
  • Still attempting to remain a stable individual about some family business that occurred this time last year. Seems to rotate between depression & anger frequently. Hard to move-on when the culprit will/would not ever discuss the matter even knowing that I know everything already. Now that things have settled back into normalcy, doubtful I will ever get that talk. It's like a very lightly iced pond. A few words about the matter and chances are you don't wish to be around me, whether from sadness, or your own personal safety.

For this next year I'm working on a few goals:

  • Lose Weight, thinking of going for 20lbs by end of February. If successful try for 50lbs total by end of May.
  • Purchase first Motorcycle, and learn to ride.
  • Go to Vegas with friends in November. (Last member of our group will be turning 21)
  • Increase number of Web Design clients.
  • Learn JQuery, Python, and C#.
  • Cook more home-made meals.
  • Get more sleep.

This year for me has been good so far. I finally started a job that I would consider career worthy. I am now two semesters away from graduating with my bachelor's degree, and said company is paying for last 2 semesters. I have started to get on my feet and get out of debt so hopefully can buy a house. I made some new friends, lost some old ones mainly over petty stuff, but eh who needs them. Got a new scar, a new car, and overall grown as a person this year. I even discovered my overly political side, and realized I disagree with about 70% of the people that live in my state.

Overall Year: 7+

I look at every day as the start of a new year, a new set of choices, an open road opening out before me...

This year I've got a headache. -3

How did the year go for you?
Decently!
Did you make any goals you set?
Several!
Tried boxing, which I need to get back to.
Ran a half marathon.
Found a great job.
What did you learn that was new or exciting in the programming world?
Not a whole lot. Defined some areas that I'd like to get better at.
How about in the personal life?
Meh. Nothing going on here haha. I moved to Boston!
How have you grown as a person?
My hair is getting longer as I put off haircuts.
What did you think was the most overrated game of the year? Under rated?
Overrated: I don't know if I'd call these games overrated, but these are the games that disappointed me:
Dishonored. Seriously, the game is so boring, and I constantly feel like it's on the edge of being cool. Probably because it *almost* feels like Half-life.
Diablo 3. Such a shallow, bland grind.
Guild Wars 2. Which skills I have available depends on my weapon? No real build creation? Handed out my credentials to a bunch of hackers? No thanks.

Games that I absolutely loved:
Borderlands 2. Voice acting is spot on, writing is hilarious, gameplay is violent fun with crazy awesome loot.
Halo 4. The gameplay was solid, and I liked multiple parts of the story. There were various flaws, but I'm glad I bought it.

I would rate the year as a 7. Things are going well, and should continue to improve.
