Re: your life?
Posted 28 December 2012 - 11:58 AM
I sit huddled over a glowing etch-a-sketch for 9 to 10 hours per day for five days a week, beating my fingers till they bleed upon an unforgiving piece of hard plastic, while the fire from my brain consumes every ounce of oxygen that is available in this miniscule 3 by 4 foot cell.
Once per day I am let out to relieve myself upon the random flower bush and grab something to eat with whatever tiny fragments of change might be squandered from within my otherwise empty pockets.
If I don't deliver working code when the empire expects it, then my very existence is threatened as I am reminded how expendable the empire thinks that code slaves like myself really are.
OK, so maybe that's not a realistic depiction of what my life is, but it certainly feels that way sometimes. I've had better jobs, and I've had worse jobs, but in truth, I still love playing with these glowing etch-a-sketches, so I put up with the rest of the negative aspects.
Just as the others said, programmers are often expected to be the be-all, end-all computer gurus of the office, and that's just not the case but it's nearly impossible to get the non-coders to really understand that. As a result, I often find myself researching how to do things that have absolutely nothing to do with my line of work, like spicing a T1 line, or setting up a long-range wireless network to feed our secured wireless to our other building four miles away.

what's a life? I was told I should get one but I've not found it online, in code, or in porn...what else is there?

It's apparently a cellular automaton devised by the British mathematician John Horton Conway in 1970.
That's what wikipedia says, at least.
