accessing webmail from mail.domain.com

Posted 27 December 2012 - 05:09 PM

the URL mail or webmail.domain.com does not work. I have to go to domain.com/webmail which redirects me to some strange url? how do i make mail or webmail.domain.com work?

on my name server:
type===== host ============== answer
CNAME    mail.domain.com     domain.com
CNAME    cpanel.domain.com   domain.com
CNAME    webmail.domain.com  domain.com
MX       domain.com          mail.domain.com

in WHM:
Main >> Server Configuration >> Tweak Settings: Proxy subdomains is ON
Main >> DNS Functions >> Edit DNS Zone >> domain.com
I see:
mail CNAME domain.com
domain.com MX mail.domain.com
cpanel/WHM/webmail all have A record pointing to my IP.

What do I need to do?
thanks

Your DNS is setup correctly, you point the webmail.domain.com to the domain.com in a cname. But is your webserver setup to answer requests for that url? If you are using apache, you need to make a vhost entry. If you are using nginx, you need to make a new server entry.

Just to verify, you can use nslookup to resolve domain.com to an ip address, & webmail.domain.com should return the same result. If it does, then the dns is correct. Just need to setup your webserver to answer the requests.

nslookup returns the same result.

in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf I see there is already
<VirtualHost myip:80>
...
ServerName server.domainB.com
ServerAlias cpanel.* whm.* webmail.*

where domainB is my VPS domain where I set up my domain as an account. still mail.domainB.com does not work either?

I also see that my addition of a subdomain and redirect through cpanel created an entry in httpd.conf, so should I be able to set mail.domain.com up through cpanel, instead of editing httpd.conf?

if i add a subdomain mail.domain.com, where should i redirect it to?

mail.domain.com will be your mx record, but webmail.domain.com will be your url for the apache vhost. It needs to be a seperate entry, you can't put two urls in the same vhost configuration.

something like :

NameVirtualHost myip:80

<VirtualHost myip:80>
  DocumentRoot /homedir/
  ServerName server.domainB.com
</VirtualHost>
<VirtualHost myip:80>
  DocumentRoot /homedir/webmail/
  ServerName webmail.domain.com
</VirtualHost>

Email address as folder? Erm, not sure what your end goal is, but I was thinking you had a webmail software installed, & wanted to load it when people went to the webmail url.

my goal is just for the url to work - http://mail.domain.com.

otherwise, how do people access their email accounts?

What I went over wsa to get your webserver to answer requests to that url. But you'll need to install a webserver software within the directory that you set your vhost rootdir to point to.

But when you say :

Quote

existing email addresses as folders.

It sounds like you are cutting out the middle man. It doesn't just work magically, I hope that I'm not assuming or insulting.
