What Version OF IE Do You Still Support?

Posted 29 December 2012 - 06:54 AM

Hi guys!

Whenever I design my sites, I do my best to make them look as consistent across browsers as possible. However, IEs 7 and 8 are giving me a lot of trouble, particularly because they don't support HTML5 and CSS3.

So I was just wondering. When designing your sites, do you still bother to support those browsers? Or do you completely ignore them?

Depends on the site. For some sites it's not all that important, and for those the last two major versions is enough in my opinion, but for others, where even a slight drop in the amount of visitors matters, you kind of have to support everything down to at least IE7.

Fortunately, people that use old versions of IE tend not to be all that technologically aware, and probably won't notice if some of the new fancy features supported only by the later browsers are missing. So you can usually get away with creating a less fancy version to fall back on. Just making sure the critical features are operational and don't look to bad tends to be enough.

I support IE 10 only... heh well ok, I try to support at least 8 and 9, and I don't really care about 7. IE 6 is hopeless.
You might want to check out prefixr to auto calculate cross browser css. I think you can use modenizr.js to teach older versions of IE the latest web standards, so you don't have to torturous ignore every breakthrough in web technology because IE doesn't support it.

I have no idea why, but we're supporting 7 and 8, but not Firefox or Chrome.
Which leads to all sorts of weird moments where the developers are reporting bugs against their own product, then realizing it's because they're using an unsupported browser.

I live in a weird world.

We only support IE 8-9 at work. Which drives me crazy since IE is horrible at best.
