Movies that should be made

Posted 20 July 2007 - 09:58 PM

Have you guys ever read a book or had an idea and thought, "Wow, that would be an awesome movie."

Or perhaps you've seen a movie and thought, "Man, that coulda been awesome if they had done it differently."

For me, it's Dune. Someone really needs to go all out on this book and capture the magic that Lynch's version was severely lacking in (80's power ballad narration?).

whatchoo guys think?

agree 100%, but i think it will have to be done in animation if they are going to do it right. no ones going to let 10 year olds kill each other and get away with the shit they do. makes sense considering the context, but parent groups will freak out over it. plus it would be so hard to find at least 3 different kids to play ender at the right ages that would all work well.

For me it's Green Eggs and Ham with Ian McKellen as Sam I Am.

With a quick glance at my book shelf:

As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner (My favorite book by a wide margin)
Declare by Tim Powers (The cold war is really over Genies, not nukes)
Last Call by Tim Powers (The Fisher King of the West takes human souls in a card game. They actually optioned this, but it never got made.)
King Rat by China Mieville (The Avatar of Rats battles his arch enemy)
Perdido Street Station by China Mieville (Steampunk, great stuff)
Neuromancer by William Gibson (Duh)
Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabrial Garcia Marquez (Wonderful, wonderful magic realism)
The Twenty-Seventh City by Jonathan Franzen (Deception, politics, and family dynamics)
The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen (Powerful family dynamics. Actually is being made, but taking forever.)
Heavy Weather by Bruce Sterling (Waiting for the F6 tornado)
Merlin's Bones by Fred Saberhagen (I was very saddened by Saberhagen's death).

Doesn't matter though, they couldn't do any of the books justice.

While I liked that it was longer and stuck closely to the book, I really hated that Newman guy who played Paul, and the guy who played the emperor. Also, production values on the series, I thought, were quite low. The performance of the Baron was excellent, however, and the series was a good step in the right direction. I also really liked the subsequent series covering Messiah and Children.

i honestly like the lynch version of dune. however, it should be noted i think almost everything david lynch does it awesome.

the mini-series is fucking unwatchable. that scene where they're wandering the "desert", which is obviously a small pile of sand and a mural behind them? hilarious.

also, i guess they're making a movie for "the watchmen." i really wish that wouldn't happen.
