Stupid/Lazy: harmless. Keep around doing whatever you can get them to do.
Stupid/Energetic: fire immediately before they do damage.
Smart/Energetic: useful, give them lots of middle-management work.
Smart/Lazy: put in high-ranking positions, they'll find efficiencies that will trickle down to everyone.

if there's one thing i know, it's that you don't need to outsource your work to spend all day on reddit.

Trickle down? I think you mean trickle on. And I think there's a difference between smart and clever. Clever figures out how to game the system. Smart knows that if everyone games the system it will fall apart.

I've done this a few times before (with approval from the client). It can be done IF you're thorough and are able to step in and pick up the slack if the subcontractor can't hack it or suddenly disappears.
The way I've done it is that I quote the client my normal rate for work but if the work isn't of a level of difficulty that would normally warrant my rate I'll offer (when I can) to have a junior dev come on board and then cut the client a deal on the rate with the proviso that I'll be overseeing the work product. Because I own my own consulting company and have a payroll set up with ADP, I can locate a junior dev and offer them a decent 1099 rate. The client gets a break on the rate and gets their work done, the junior dev gets a side gig, extra income and extra experience (and something to add to their resume) and I do retain a small portion of the rate I charge (usually $5-$10/hr). It's a rarer event than I'd like but it can be made to work and can be a win/win/win for everyone involved.
The mistake the dude in the article made was pretty much what LOD said: he was less than forthcoming with his bosses and tried to do it on the down low and prolly pocket most of the money (if 9/10 is accurate then yeah, he's being a bit of a greedy bastard).

This man has upper management written all over him.
He was hitting deadlines and considered the top programmer in the company. This man probably just started his own consulting firm. He did the same thing his boss does when he brings in 3-4 contractors.
I can't be mad at him.

Don't listen to the pigs, neo. Keep the skin covered. Being heard and being ogled are two different things.
And you boys should be ashamed of yourselves... waltzing around, professing to respect women, then doling out such sage advice as "show some skin".
Fucking neanderthals.

I'm having trouble reconciling these two statements. It's upper management that's responsible for the state of the economy, making us more and more like Mexico with each passing year. I'm sure this guy thinks of himself as a "job creator" but he's really just profiting on the arbitrage that will exist for a short time (maybe a few years at most) before his job is shipped out permanently.
