I am curious about getting into game development

Posted 16 January 2013 - 04:11 PM

Hi, i have been searching google for literally the last couple days trying to learn about this but i cant find ANYTHING,
i am trying to get into serious game programming, not because i think i might get rich or something stupid like that but i would like to be on a game development team one day because i think that would be great for me.
I would like to be a professional game engine programmer one day that doesn't do any visual stuff like graphics or anything like that because i'm bad at that, i am competent at java and some other OO languages, my only C++ experience is a book called "C++ a beginners guide",
so if anyone could please tell me what i would need to learn to get on track of being a game programmer?
and do i need to know OpenGL/Direcx, because i got the opengl superbible 5th edition and its not good at all, so could anyone recommend any good books for learning game development?, Thanks

oh and i am new to this site and i am very sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question, Thanks

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

C++ is required for game development. Few good books on programming, a compiler and development tools should be good. However java is essential if you want to program a web based games. CUTTING EDGE 3-D GAME PROGRAMMING WITH C++ is a book I'd recommend.

Yes, a very good book indeed. I did a quick amazon search and I found that you are getting the book (used previously) for less than $5 if you include the shipping.

If you are interested, do take a look here

regards,
Raghav

Not exactly. There are many avenues these days to create games. A professional studio will most likely require you to know C++ yes, but it's not true to say C++ is required for game programming.

Wait, so you like engine programming but not graphics programming? So what part of engine programming do you want to focus on?

i guess what i need answers to is:
could anyone recommend a good book for learning OpenGL?
is OpenGL, DirectX and a great working knowledge of c++ all that i need to know o get a job as a game programmer writing AI, physics or graphics?

if i could get the answer to these things it would be great plus the book i am getting for directx is
http://www.amazon.co...58366330&sr=8-1
it has very good reviews
and the book i have for OpenGL is the superbible 5th edition which i hear the 4th edition is better, so could anyone recommend a better OpenGL book?

So.. just to be clear.. the GL in openGL is graphics library, right? If you don't want to learn about graphics and want to learn about game engines then perhaps pushing your searching to 'game engine architecture'.. you know.. so books like this pop up:

Ok but it wouldn't hurt to know about opengl and directx so that's why i ask about a good opengl book, right now i am very confused, and after more hours of research i would just like to know lots about game programming/graphics programming, sorry for the confusion.

Well there is 'lots' to know. Start with an "intro to game programming book".. flip through the tutorials here.. and get your bearing.
