Whats the point of a Programmer/Analyst internship?

Posted 17 January 2013 - 01:25 PM

So far I've been sitting around doing nothing for the past week...they haven't given me any tasks/projects to work on or anyone to shadow or whatever. I've taken it upon myself to walk around and introduce myself and ask to see what each person is working on and I took notes just so i could figure out the current projects being worked on. Any advice from people who've been through this? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like they've learned what they needed to learn about you.
You're content with sitting back and waiting for work to be given to you. You're not beating down doors asking for work, making an effort to get yourself inserted into a project even if it is just skud work.
Yep, they've tested you and learned what they needed to learn.

Sometimes management just gets busy and forgets about the lowly new intern. Also, it's entirely possible the Klingon is right and you have been tested and found to be wanting.

Most likely, the guy who's supposed to be supervising you has a billion other things on his plate, and is looking at you as one more task to get to. To put a previous suggestion a bit more gently: help him out. You've talked to people - does it sound like anyone there has something you could help with? Is there anyone you'd especially like to work with? Are there holes you can fill?
You've got a blank slate at the moment. If you play it right - and none of us know what right is, because we're not there - you can steer into something cool.

Maybe there's bugs you can fix, or documentation you can write, or something else. If they haven't come up with something after a week, you might as well get on it.

Want an instant in? Bring coffee. That wins you a ton of points, and gets a good start on. Trite, perhaps, but unfortunately the lower you are on the totem the more you have to do to get on peoples good sides. Remember that for the most part you'll have to earn the right to talk and get attention.

Politics, whether or not you like them, are the dominating force in most places. You'd be surprised and horrified at how little code will be considered for a few months. Not to say it won't happen, but it's a shell shock.
