I'd mention that Java has been the just about the most popular language in the world for the past 8 - to 10 years, but then I'd be cmomitting a logical fallacy myself, the appeal to popularity, so I won't. But wait! I kind of just did!
In nany event, it is Java's benchmarks that speak for themselves. Java is fast. Anyone who claims otherwise is simply ignorant.
