Ok after much internet search and what not trying to find the notepad in windows 8 without having use the run executable, I final was able to find it.
All the internet searches tell you to do the follow:
hover over the start menu at the bottom left hand corner and when the menu pops up hover tot he bottom left of that menu. After this a section will pop up that says applications. Click that and there it is.
Well the above is wrong.
The correct method:
Open your right side menu and click on the search Icon.
On the right side when all the apps open is the accessory menu with notepad right there.

To be clear - post any thing you found in terms of shortcuts, tips, or what not that helps you be more efficient in your day to day use of windows 8.
