what skills would i need to write a 3D game?

Posted 24 January 2013 - 02:26 PM

Hi, i was wondering what other skills i need to have before i could even think about writing a small 3D game?
and also if you could answer,
would they teach me some of these skills when i go to get my degree in Computer Science with a focus game design and development?,
Thanks

Other than... what? I would imagine actually finishing a game.. any game.. in some sort of api or sdk would be helpful. You know - that whole 'actually take a step so you can evaluate' thing. Then polygons, textures, model rigging, how to operate in 3d space, etc.

I would imagine that depends on the school and the teachers.

Both of those apply to pretty much all game development at some degree.

Yes.. a whole mess of things.. things like what I listed... I mean go look at a '3d game programming book' on amazon and see what their index highlights.

Well, you need to be a strong programmer for a start. Then get to grips with linear algebra and an API like OpenGL.

Not really any such course; you either do computer science, or game development. The game dev courses are very focused on game development and less focused on alternative software development disciplines.

oh so which one would be better for employment in the games industry, just the computer science degree or the game development degree?

This is actually a question that sparks a lot of debate. I advice is that if you are going to invest in an education you should go for that which allows you to cast your net widest. I'm a computer science graduate, I have seen the vast majority of programmers in the industry with computer science degrees. Having said that, those who have been to game schools have also turned out well in the industry, but generally don't appear to be senior for some reason. Then again, getting a game school education gives you a significant head start, so there are many variables to consider when choosing which route you wish to take.

Bare in mind that even if you do go to game school it doesn't guarantee you a place in the industry; you can end up with a game degree and not find work in games at all leaving you with an unused specialized degree.

When I studied there were no viable game schools, in fact when I was a student I didn't plan in getting into games. But for the sake of argument I would choose computer science again if I had the choice.

But to each their own.

i guess the computer science degree would probably be more useful and with regards to an API like OpenGL i found this site: http://nehe.gamedev.net/
but it seems a little dated so i guess i will take what i can from it and keep searching, Thanks

No, computer science is the theory and application of computer technology. Don't expect a computer science course to teach you OpenGL. What a computer science degree does is give you the foundations to understand how computers work to great detail, and this knowledge will facilitate you learning what you need to in order to make games.

You have a long road ahead of you.

i just think it would be cool to do something productive with programming and games programming seems like a interesting challenge, i find very hard to get a grasp as opposed to regular programming a normal app
