I didn't think this was a thing, but I'm not surprised. I'm also not surprised that tons of them are made by HP. Who seriously gives their printer its own public IP address instead of a 10.X.X.X or a 192.168.X.X? I know tons of you lurkers are going to try printing to all these machines, so please don't >.>

I think I remember a similar thing only with airport cameras (that might have even been our own Martyr in one of his blog posts a long while back). It makes you wonder what other sort of devices you can search for online and control.

Honestly, I don't think I really paid that much attention when I set up my parents printer. There was just a little wizard that walked though it; anyone could use it. I have no clue weather it's setup with it's own public IP or weather it is on a private network. I wonder if the setup wizards played a part in this. no one would knowingly let anyone access there printer, right?

What completely perplexes me and i recall it from ads on TV a year or two ago is the logic behind printing over the web. In all honesty i cannot for the life of me see a reason for it? I think it was a HP add regarding printing images over the net, i mean honestly why print something when you're not there to pick it up?

Print a document over the web to read when you get home ? How about just linking or emailing the file home? I seriously cannot see the point of printing over the web. Is anything that pressing ? I mean seriously if your within a big corporation then a VPN or something along those lines will keep printers networked together

PS i printed a file telling whoever it is to get the printer off the www and smarten up.

I wrote a Ruby script that uploads a .pdf with the words ia ia cthulhu fhtagn written in red of varying font faces and sizes over and over again.

I think there is far too much printing being done, period. Most (almost all) of that paper and ink is just wasted. If you have a computer, cell phone, or tablet then printing to a pdf is not only more economical and environmentally friendly, but it's easier and more portable too.

One of the highschools I attended had that. Was pretty fun because kids would print out the most obscene things and threats on teachers they didn't like.

One day as I sat in English pron started printing out. Pretty funny stuff.

a book of totally black pages
or
the complete RGB color cube in discrete slice.

Or even better, print out blank pages every now and then. The printers are haunted

Kind of like all the generous free "linksys" WiFi hotspots you find scattered around neighborhoods?

..Which sometimes even let you access their normally LAN-only printers?

This happened to me once. Dormmate got access to the contraband wifi my roommate had set-up in our room, with the printer directly wired into it.

He printed so much pron I had to buy a new ream of paper + new ink. Adding insult to injury, the tray was not stretched out, so all the printings spilled all over the dorm floor. Quite the surprise coming back from class.
