Posted 26 January 2013 - 06:15 PM

Hi everyone;
Can someone please answer two of my questions?
First, what is wrong with my html program?
<!doctype html>

<html>
<head>
<title>AgreementReader</title>
</head>

<body>
<h1>Introduction to web design</h1>
<p>This tag is soppuse to break up text into paragraphs</p>
<p>This tag is soppuse to break up text into paragraphs</p>
This tag is soppuse to move text <br /> onto the next line <br /> good for things such a addresses
</body>
</html>

Second, what is a better program (notepad++ or eclipse) to use for some one that is new using html?

Thank you for your help,

You don't have any error.

You are using the HTML5 doctype so <br> is sufficient, rather than <br />.

Content should be contained in tags. Whilst not technically incorrect you should always follow this practice.

I prefer <!DOCTYPE html> and I wouldn't have a blank line following this line; but again, this is not technically incorrect.

And, I suppose, spelling..

Notepad++ will be much easier to start with.

BTW I wouldn't use BRs for an address; I would format it correctly with CSS. (BR tags should be used sparingly - they add unnecessary mark-up to a page.)

What exactly are you trying to accomplish with your html?
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
<title>AgreementReader</title>
</head>

You can add the charset to specify to your document that your encoding for HTML.

Notepad ++ is a nice program to start, if your interested in learning pure code.

You don't need
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />

in HTML5 (particularly the ' /' at the end), although this syntax is still allowed. We can just use:

<meta charset="UTF-8">

Well, you could use either but you need to know that Eclipse is an IDE whereas Notepad++ is just a text editor.

Personally, for a beginner who is using HTML, I would suggest Eclipse as it has some good features like intellisense, which actually suggests as you type...an integrated browser to see your output...and of course, an internal debugger which will notify you of the errors you have.

Edit: Well, at the end of the day, no matter which one you use, you should be happy with it :)

regards,
Raghav

I wouldn't recommend eclipse as a first editor - it's a mare to set-up and configure. If intellisense is required (for HTML, CSS, etc.) then I would recommend Komodo Edit. It is also free and requires zero configuration.

Notepad++ also has intellisense (auto-completion) but, as I recall, you need to turn it on via Settings, Preferences, and I think it is fairly basic.
