what interesting and useful stuff a lonely c/c++ programmer can do ?

Posted 28 January 2013 - 07:59 AM

i am a hobbyist programmer looking mainly for fun (some cash is not bad tbh) , i have programmed before in VB6 ,c# and some c++. i realize that c/c++ is used heavily in programming operating systems/games...etc.i really like the idea of low level /high performance programming that is why i like c++. the problem is that programming these stuff require massive number of programmers , not something i can do alone.

what interesting and useful stuff a lonely c/c++ programmer can do ?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

You can create whatever if you put your mind to it... From simple automation scripts, to full complex computing software...
See this thread if you are looking for ideas! You can also find interesting projects here on DIC!

thank you for your kind response.what actually came into my mind (and forgot to include in the question) is that c/c++ is used to be used for system /low level programming as well as desktop programming. however, nowadays everything is going to the web and mobile programming. so i thought : what else is practically left for c/c++ except games / OS programming ?

Whatever you can do in other languages can be and is done in C/C++.

But a lot of cases in double the time with double the hassle.

In some cases yes, Ryano121. Some languages do have a better frame work and different/multiple API's you can work with that are simply not compatible with C++.

@jeorge_kabbi, we can visually see that the trend right now is mobile development. But the backbone to many companies (may I say most) still use C/C++/C#/Java as their main language. I've not doven into the industry just yet, I'm a second year Engineering student. But alot of the workterms I have applied for require experience in C++/C/C#/.NET/SQL, you name it. C++ is a powerful language that is still used everywhere today.

C++ is based off of C which is itself a powerful language. Servers throughout the world have long-running programs that are written in C/C++ and it would cost too much money to rewrite them in another language, and besides why reinvent the wheel? This is also the reason for backwards-compatibility and why certain things are in the language that people don't like. Anyway you look at it, C/C++ is going nowhere, that's a fact.

you could make some games, they don't have to be that big or complicated for that matter.

theres plenty of API's, libraries, or even engines if you dont want to deal with the hassle of the low level base of it.

personally if the game is done right i prefer 2d indie games over most the AAA 3D 8 hour experience.

Hope this was at least mildly helpful :)

I would look into making games. There a couple nice high level APIs called openframeworks and cinder which offer a nice layer of abstraction on top of opengl for rendering, along with a lot of other niceties.
