What's the new standard library(s) for making multiplayer games

Posted 28 January 2013 - 05:47 PM

I am after learning Directx11 and was wondering how multiplayer games were made using it.
I know DirectPlay was depreciated a long time ago and now I'm unsure whether I should learn WinSoc or use XNA or if there is something completely different
I will really appreciate any replies thank you :)/>

As you may be aware DirectPlay has been deprecated. There is no replacement as far as I am aware in the latest version of DirectX replacing it, so you will need to look at an alternative like Winsock or whatever.

The 'big companies' use whatever is applicable to the platforms they are developing for. For consoles, what will be used will be available in the console SDK or middleware of some kind, which is something you will not have access to because you are not a professional developer.

i mean for windows eg WINSOCK, WINSOCK2
don't worry if you think im one of those people who expect to get access to a professional SDK i dont overestimate my abilities haha
I plan to make a simple multiplayer game for two people and as soon as all the bugs are worked out in that i moved to 3 then 4 and so on(1 or 2 years down the road). but i want something that is capable of handling an infinite amount of people(not really but you get my point)
Thanks for your replies :)

Your question just isn't clear. As pointed out, what we use depends on a number of factors, and there is a lot more out there than Winsock.

You need to review your game idea to not have to handle a huge number of players because you will never have a huge number. You need to look at platform capabilities and the amount of data you intend to transfer over the network.

Please don't say you meant something else.

Any chance of naming some you favor please?
Then i could research them and pick which one i see will best suit

Its only going to be maybe 10 of my friends including me playing a game that each of us will develop different parts
eg. one guy makes a simple fps area, another makes a car racing area when we are done with the fps area.
data wise i would it will probably be high at first and then we can chisel it down over time making it more efficiant
Its a project made to look good on our resumes when we go looking for jobs just to show we are a well rounded team

Sorry for not being clear i taught there was just one dominant way to do it my mistake

I don't have any favorites. It comes down to requirements like I said.

I've done some more research and Berkeley sockets seems to be the way to go, what are your thoughts on it?

No, I am not going to give you examples. Everything you need is out there: tutorials, examples, variety of APIs.

I don't understand what your obsession is. You have access just by googling to what the professionals use. If you are looking for code snippets that I've used in production there is no chance of me providing that as I signed an agreement not to.

You are going about this completely the wrong way. Learn from the ground up, get code working over stressing about what you should specifically use.

As far as I'm concerned this matter is now closed unless you have specific network programming questions regarding issues with code.

Sorry - we don't delete topics.. remember this is a volunteer forum. Just because you don't like the answer doesn't mean you get all fussy about it. As jon.kiparsky says - "chillax'.

If you have an issue by all means.. shoot me a pm.
