Windows users to exceed 1 billion

Posted 29 July 2007 - 09:28 PM

(I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this post, if its not then I apologize)

eWeek.Com reports that windows install base will exceed 1 billion by the end of Microsoft's fiscal year end 2008.

Quote

"If you stop and just think about that, parse that for a second, by the end of our fiscal year '08, there will be more PCs running Windows in the world than there are automobiles, which is at least to me kind of a mind-numbing concept."

Steve Ballmer - Microsoft CEO

Thats a lot of Windows installs/users. Just found this story interesting :P

Marko's avatar is of Steve Ballmer. I think he's got a framed/laminated photo of him and a pair of his boxers that he sniffs occasionally.

I feel when a person beings to code, he should use linux ..
Windows is for application users and not for application developers..
The sooner we realize this .. the better we would be able to make a free world..

Three Cheers for open-source ..

you can't develop for any system unless you are on it. the best os for application developers to use is the one they are developing for, period.

While I can see this thread developing into yet another round of *nix vs. windoze, I would offer this (and keep in mind I have always said that people should use whatever OS they are comfortable with, I don't care which one it is - hell, even I keep an instance of windows running in my home for some M$ dev activities, and the fact that my wife likes it):

In any meaningful PC distribution operation (and i'm speaking of your retailers here), Windows is the default OS on almost any system sold. The numbers quoted by Ballmer include everything like that, they are not a reflection of the copies of the OS that have been sold to the public.

That being said, it cannot be denied that M$ has a huge portion of the market share, so it must be working for most folks! ;)

I agree, 100% with the idea that each OS has it's purpose.

That being said, I only have THIS to say about the topic. Most of your store bought PCs are running Windows. So when Best Buy, CompUSA, or Wally-Mart sells a PC off the shelf, Microsoft adds another tic on their "people running our OS" sheet. Some of those computers will be taken home & formated, adding another OS. Receintly more & more of the top computer manufacturers, Dell, HP, etc etc, are shipping servers, computers, & laptops with Linux as an option.
