The reason why we procrastinate.
Posted 30 January 2013 - 05:36 PM
The following is a hypothesis that I believe to be true,
If you have a big challenge ahead of you, one that you know is going to make you start tearing your hair out and curse like a russian sailor, you might hesitate to deal with it. It all boils down to a rewarding system.
The reason why you'd rather browse youtube for cute cat videos or choosing to read 9gag posts instead of finishing that time machine you've been wanting to build is because the reward you get from watching on youtube, reading posts on 9gag, browsing facebook, etc is, although a lot smaller, more easily obtained than the reward you'd get if you sat yourself down and started facing the real problems.
For example, today I was going to setup a DNS-Server Role in Windows Server 2008 R2 all by myself for the first time. Not having done that before I already assumed that there was going to be an enourmous heap of problem-solving and obstacles in my way before I'd ever get it to work. And if you, like me, suspect that you got ADD (I should be a rapper. Making rhymes here), it'll only make things harder.
And problems there was! (It batantly REFUSED to forward my queries to a local apache-server.) But after 5 hours straight of completely wearing down and neutralizing all curse words in Collins English dictionary I finally got it to work. And the reward felt great.
Substance of this topic is, what are your procrastinating habbits? How do you fight them? Do you succeed in doing it?

Let me lead off with - really? Nationalistic stereotypes? That makes me a sad panda.
I imagine not all Russians have a filthy dirty mouth. Though I have not met a Russian in person, nor have visited Russia - mostly because I view it as a colder variant of Tijuana. Though bigger. With vodka. And the mafia.

Another odd stereotype just floated out there like the last. Please oh please tell me this post has a stellar jew joke at the end.

See.. five hours isn't that big of deal. I've carefully crafted and pruned D&D characters over *YEARS* of leveling. I've whipped an innocent herd of cows (found, unassumingly, in the flavor text) into a frothy frenzy just to have them trample an entire village over a bit of XP, trinkets, and a few low level magic coins. Could I have gone about it differently, sure, but nothing beats the efficiency to squeeze every last XP drop out of the encounter for a few steps closer to that next level.
Also I hear pregnancy is a bit longer than an impending five hour energy drink crash, and the (allegedly) "the reward felt great". It's all about perspective baby.
I just hit the end and did not find my jew joke so I must help the OP out. The reason I don't procrastinate is because I value my time like a bullish currency. One may say I hoard it. I am stingy with with my time. I even have been told I am miserly with it.
Like a jew.
With money.

I'm here trying to share my views and perspective with you people on a certain topic while all you seem to do is find ways to amuse yourselves by bashing it (and me). Really? My expectations were higher than that. Discussion from my part ends here.
