If you apply my two interfaces idea to your example, a derived CarInternals class would have the mutator method, and the accessor method and private variable would be in the base class. That would keep Joe Random Programmer who doesn't read his class diagrams at bay to some extent, if he weren't too terminally determined to screw the pooch.
