I also recently learned that 40% of abuse cases in the USA are by the mother alone. 18.3% by fathers alone. And 17.3% by both parents together. (the rest by babysiters, extended family, etc)

http://www.americanh...statistics.html

Quote

Approximately 40 percent of child victims were maltreated by their mothers acting alone; another 18.3 percent were maltreated by their fathers acting alone; 17.3 percent were abused by both parents (USDHHS, 2007).

I thought this was interesting after spending most of my childhood in family court where they told me my father was inherently abusive because he was a dad.

Well, well, it's still the father's fault, because he's a man.

Last statistic I saw (a few days ago) was that 1 in 3 women have been beaten or raped

I just remembered a 3 being in there, but 1 in 3 seemed too high so I said 13. it could very well be 1 in 3. although what I saw was specifically talking about sexual assault and not physical assault so I don't know.

In the states?

It's 1 in 5/6 (18.3%) according to a study funded by the CDC:
http://www.cdc.gov/V...eport2010-a.pdf

Note this statistic is based on claims made by interviewed participants. It also included the definition of rape to include sex that was consented under the influence of drugs or alcohol. And the study had a 30% response rate out 20,000 interviews.

This is the study quoted by most feminist organizations.

Like:

RAINN:
http://www.rainn.org...assault-victims

feministing.com
http://feministing.c...ally-assaulted/

I personally like to point out the caveats of said study because many organizations have considered the numbers to be tilted. I don't want to down play rape in our country, I just find it odd that if I have sex drunk with another woman, she was raped, but I wasn't... or that ANYONE was for fucks sake.

I apply a certain rule to most documentaries I watch. About 40 minutes into a lot of 1 hour documentaries, they start going a little too extreme for the average audience member. If you're watching one about meteor impacts, the last 20 minutes is where they start talking about Armageddon-style solutions to an Earth impact. If you're watching one about presidential assassinations, the last 20 minutes is where they start talking about the Freemasons or Illumaniti running a massive conspiracy controlling assassins for a thousand years. I'm obviously just making shit up to illustrate a point (and doing a poor job of it no doubt), but the point is that the end of documentaries is basically where they start trying to sell shit that I'm not necessarily interested in buying. Food for thought, maybe, but the speculation far outweighs the evidence that they present. And for me at least, hearing some of the silly shit that gets stuffed at the end makes me a little more skeptical of what was said before it.

What lordofduct just mentioned is a similar situation. Considering alcohol impairment as an automatic rape brings discredit to a very, very serious topic. I'd love to turn rapists over to some Deliverance-style motherfuckers for punishment. But deliberately trying to warp statistics to make an issue seem more prevalent than it really is (as if the subject of rape isn't serious enough on its own, or the actual number of rapes isn't enough to be serious) just detracts from everything else they say. They're cheapening the subject matter. And it bugs the shit out of me.

Agreed.

The problem though stands with why they include such a definition. It is not at an attempt to skew the numbers. It's that many social scientists believe that rape's definition should include such instances.

The type of rape is being called "gray rape". There's many pop culture articles about it (see Cosmopolitan) as well as serious debate about the social cause of it. The experts tend not to consider the committers to be malicious... but they still include it as a rape and don't emphasize that they've essentially created a spectrum for rape... ranging from irresponsibility to violent. Resulting in laymen to then read statistics upside down like in this case.

This has resulted in many an argument between me and social scientists (my girlfriend included who is a sociology major) about the importance of labeling that divide. The argument being we can't ignore things like gray rape and the impact on society... but usually ignoring my argument that the impact of lending people to think the wrong things when they see such rape statistics as that.

Whatever though... I usually don't know what I'm talking about. As one of my "friends" says, "well you're a privileged white rapist... so you don't know."
