Question about the Betfair API in my C# application

Posted 05 February 2013 - 11:35 AM

I am currently working on a project that I need some advice on. It is a betting application that allows users to do soccer bets. I want to know if it is possible to retrieve live soccer betting odds from the Betfair API(or anywhere else) and display them to the user. The user will then be able to use those live odds to place a bet. My application will then calculate the return and display it to the user. There will be no real money involved. It will all just be for fun.

I don't think that I can use the Betfair api, without logging in to a Betfair account each time. Is there any other way I could retrieve odds from a site and use them in my application. I think that I have explained it as best I can.

Thanks for your time.

Jim.

If they provide an API then you would follow the instructions in the API.

If you're asking for help getting their data without having an account, we won't help you.

It is not what I am asking. I am asking if there is another way of getting live odds from a webpage, using C#. I would like to use the API, but I don't think I can do so, without signing in every time and having an active account.

I was reading up on "Screen Scraping" earlier today. I think that this could be an alternative to use the API.

I have every confidence that you can send your credentials through the API programmatically. You wouldn't have to do it manually at the keyboard and mouse. Your program would log in using the credentials that you were provided.

If you would read the API documentation you wouldn't be wondering.

and having an active account

Yes, one of the conditions of using their API would be to have an active account. If you're not willing to pay for the data, you can't use the API.

Yes, you could theoretically "screen scrape" their pages, but that's probably against their terms of service, and it's unethical as well, when they're offering actual access to their data via an account.

We're not going to help you get around someone else's terms of service. How would you like it if you published an application and someone asked us how to use it without paying?

I'm not asking for help to do anything illegal. I didn't mean that I wanted to screen scrape betfairs pages. There are other sites which also offer odds for matches.

Well, if you want to investigate screen scraping, I suggest you download the Html Agility Pack and start trying it out on some websites. That's the best tool for getting and parsing HTML data. Just understand that they can change their sites at any time to break your application completely; it's not good practice to rely on scraping a public site. It's always better to use APIs if you can.

Ok, thank you for your help.

I will read more of the API documentation and maybe go in search of a different API to use.
