Looking for a VPS host

Posted 09 February 2013 - 07:29 PM

It seems to me through my surfing that VPS would give me more control over running my site than doing templates and presets. I've been looking for a host that has the standard LAMP setup, but just because you have PHP installed, does that necessarily give you the access to run any PHP file on the server indefinitely (the PHP websocket, under google code: https://code.google....ocket-server/)? Some people have recommended:

  • Linode.com
  • Gandi.com
  • TheWebPole.com

The first option, linode, was the one I had the most attachment to, but I want to make sure I consider other hosts. So what host, if not listed already, would you recommend? I'd like to be able to run my site alongside the PHP websocket listening on a specific port. Thanks.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

You'll be hard-pressed to find better bang for your buck than GoDaddy:

I'm not sure about listening to specific sockets, but you could give customer service a call and see what they say.

Check out VPS hosting at dreamhost.com. It costs as little as 20 / $25 per month and they are a Wordpress partner. Their customer service is also very good and helpful. They offer unlimited storage and bandwidth as well.

Think of using a VPS from santrex.net or a2hosting.com.
Both have stable VPS deals and their servers are reliable and support is active and responsive around the clock.

1&1 is okay, they have backups of your server taken about every few days, their tech support doesn't have long wait times, and you can choose from several different types of setups.

I prefer to go with bare-bones Centos6/RedHat, but they do offer the same OS but with Plesk installed, if that's your type of thing.

I pay $30 a month for mine, domain name included.

For my personal stuff I use Linode. The plan I use is the 1GB and $20/mo is more than enough for my simple needs.

My current VPS provider is vm.org. I would also recommend spexhost with the DDOS protection

Wow, at $40 a month I have to disagree. My vote is for the much less expensive option of $5 or $10 per month on Digital Ocean. Plus they use lightning fast ssds.

Hi,

I would definitely recommend DigitalOcean.
Great (and really quick) service, simple and elegant control panel, cheap pricing ($10 per GB), unlimited bandwidth (yes, they're not monitoring usage yet).
And Cloud powered ;)
