No. How does knowing you like to drink Coca Cola while wearing Rebok shoes make it cool?

well sometimes it can be helpful, like my CCNA one shows that Networking and Cisco hardware is kinda my special area here on DIC, and I like to express that I'm big into Battlefield 2142...

Some of them are pretty stupid though, there is a limit.

Mine says lots about me without user bars! I like crystals, Bomberman, programming video games, ect. My signature says it all without even using that many words. I'm even thinking of taking out the 'dream in code author' thing because it sounds redundant after it is displayed under my title.

edit: I removed it from my signature.

So whats the different between your signature image and someone have 2 or 3 bars? I don't see a problem with them at all, but, once again, thats just my opinion.

I had found about 12 that I wanted to use. I narrowed that down to 3, 2 stressing Operating Systems, & Invader Zim. If it REALLY bothers you, block the hosts & you won't see them.

I think that the userbars of some companies(every commercial) should be banned in this community and I'm very serious about this, it's a spam people no matter what is the message inside them whether the user hates them or not. Bad publicity is better than no publicity(for them). So if that company wants their name here they should to pay this community.
With the other userbars I have no problem.

This seems to be an interesting question. User bars could be a good alternative for commercials / ads that show you just the bright side of things, because they show you what people are actually using, thus they are much more like a recommendation themselves, which are much more valuable than an ad.
So if you ban the commercial ones, then you just take away the possibility for them to finally come down to earth, ditch idiot ads, and try to build communities, where real usability and support counts.

OR everyone can just stop taking them so literal and just see them as little images that express the person's interests and skills.

There is a little more psychology to this, every person views them differently and the effect (according to me ) is more add(commercial) less personality check. Why do you think psychology is being studied in marketing?

I am not saying that users should take off their userbars, I like userbars but I find interesting that some companies are paying money to advertise let say in such communities as this, and some (I wasn't going to name but what the hell) like Coca Cola or Pepsi or whatever are also advertising themselves for free. It's a free add and that is what it bothers me.
And I guess that when the presidential elections come in the USA there is a good chance that users like the one we have with the Ron Paul sig, will be far too many. Just wondering around the forums and the lounge and spamming this place. I'll say it again it's a free add.
My bottom line is that those companies that are paying are loosing in respect of those who don't, the effect of the adds is nearly the same and maybe those companies who are paying for the adds are direct competitors in a same field in industry.

Re: What's with these user bars?

My opinion is this:

I think people are making way more of these bars than they really are. My signature "advertises" MCSD & MCAD, does this mean Microsoft is getting a free ad out of me? Do I care that Microsoft is getting a free ad out of me? No, I have them because I am proud of my accomplishments. I think these bars are more about the person using them than the product they "advertise".

So what it Pepsi is paying someone to have a Pepsi User bar (hell Id do it if they paid me), its called capitalism, if the other companies feel they are loosing out to the companies paying for these types of ads then they need to themselves start paying for them too.

Like Marko, he is proud of his CCNA, as he should be, and I'm sure he wears that bar with pride. It's really not a big deal people. In fact I wish I had the template people use for them bars so I can take the 2 images I have for certifications off and have them on a bar as well :)

have you ever worn clothing with a name brand on it? have you ever bought ANY product with a name brand on it? Guess what, it's not free advertising for them, get this, you're actually paying them to advertise for them.

HOLY SHEEEE NO WAY DUDES.
