Yes, learn HTML (HTML Dog) first, then CSS.

[I would link to tutorials here at DIC but they are out of date; well, more out of date than the HTML Dog one.]

Start with a basic text editor; after a while, download Notepad++.

Hmm, I'm using codeacademy for learning HTML, is that a good idea? Also is a such thing where I can build free, simple web pages to sharpen my webdev skills?

You can build web pages using any text editor and preview them in your browser. I can't advise you about codeacademy though.

definitely need to learn html and css for web development. After you get somewhat comfortable with those you could start looking into javascript as well. These are all technologies that are used client side, which is just another way of saying they are interpreted by the web browser. Eventually you will want to look into learning a server-side programming language such as ruby, C#, PHP, or Java that you can use for handling business logic and for working with databases.
