slick - tile map and double buffering

Posted 20 February 2013 - 07:12 AM

Hello,

few questions here..

I found a kool tilemap on yahoo images.. it has a bunch of images all in one image, but my problem is i do not know how to use that image and get them usable to make a map.
I am using Slick and I know there is a way, but typing in tile map tutorial in yahoo only brings up code and cokes tutorial and it doesnt actually use an image..

any ideas as to where I might find a good tutorial or even an example source code on how to break down an image and use it as a tile map?

also, I remember when i was first learning about java a few years back (i got frustrated and gave up back then) that in order to have smooth games you needed to use double buffering, but I dont hear about that or see it in any tutorials, is that still nessesary? how about in slick, should I be double buffering in slick?

Thank you for any help on these.
Randor

The tilemap you just load into a BufferedImage and use subimage to split each part. If you google 'How to split tilemap java' you should come up with some tutorials/examples. As for Slick, I'm not completely familiar with OpenGL (Something I have not got around to learning yet :dozingoff:/>/>) In Java, yes most the time you could use double buffer to fix 'flicker'. In OpenGL when I played with it, I never had this problem.

Possibly a good idea to look up some Slick tutorials?

Thanks Kinaces,

I am currently neck deep in slick tutorials and I kinda like this openGL thing.. I have been watching BostonRob on youtube.. he has great tutorials, i recommend his if you ever wanna learn it. but unfortunatly I cannot find anything he has done that uses tilemaps hence why I come to you fine folks.

I will now look under the keywords you have provided.

Thanks a bunch
Randor
