What is this language called? C++.net?

Posted 22 February 2013 - 11:22 AM

Hello,
I've spent about 4 months coding in a language - but I don't know what that language is called.

What is it called when you use the C++ part of Visual Studio? You know how there's VB.net, C#, and C++ options for visual studio, right? Well what do I put in my resume if I know the basics of the c++ part of that? I know for sure it's not real c++. What is the language actually called?

Crap?

C++.NET hits the nail on the head. Also, C++/CLI.

The only possible reason to use this bastardized stepchild of C++ would be to support some legacy stuff you need to shoehorn into a .NET assembly. You'd do better with C# or, even, VB.NET.

Note, C++/CLI is NOT Visual C++. Rather, Visual C++ is a software bundle offering both standard C++ ( well, as standard is MS gets ) and the .NET version.

Visual Studio is the IDE. C++ is the language.

What are you trying to put on your resume: Knowledge of the language or knowledge of the IDE? If you want to claim you have experience with the IDE, you mention Visual Studio. If you want to claim familiarity with the language, you mention C++.

I know for sure it's not real c++.
You are certain...how?

It could be used C++. Or you could have been learning C++/CLI as the previous posters pointed out. Can you post sample code you have written? We can identify if it is C++ or not.
