I would mirror the type of work you are looking to get experience in. For example it doesn't do you much good landing a job in dot net if you do php open source projects.
What is it that you desire to learn?

Web programming, Java applications, HTML, something of that nature. MySQL is also widely looked for but I have no experience with that yet.

Then get some. No excuses for not doing some personal projects and gaining experience that way. If it ends up going that far you may end up with your own open source project.

I've actually been able to show employers various things I've done on my own and it mean something. They'll appreciate your initiative of creating your own thing over just trying to follow someone else, too.. As long as your project turns out well.
