.htaccess internal server error

Posted 28 February 2013 - 04:50 PM

Hi there, i am trying to change 'the upload_max_filesize' and the 'post_max_size' of my server and when using locally i can just change the php.ini file and include:

upload_max_filesize 50M
post_max_size 55M

this works fine however i need to host it on a ftp server and seen as i dont have access to php.ini i think i will have to use a .htaccess file but when i create one and include just:

upload_max_filesize 50M
post_max_size 55M

all i get is an 500 internal server error.

I wondered if this is a problem on the server side that doesnt let me change the upload sizes or whether i need to include other things in order for the .htaccess file to work and allow me to view my site?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I am pretty sure you can only do this, when using shared for example hosting, with the php.ini file (or with admin access to htaccess), which in most cases they do not allow the user to change.
Contact the host and see what they can do. They often do not allow access to the php.ini file because, well, that would give you real unlimited access, breaking their so called "unlimited" packages.

Good luck.
