Game programming tattoo

Posted 03 March 2013 - 01:10 PM

Hello everyone my girlfriend and I decided we are going to get some tattoo's done. I would really like to get something related to game programming. Just curious if anyone has any good ideas. So far my ideas are to use chunks of code in certain areas of my body for example matrix rotation on my shoulders.

For example
XMMATRIX rotationMat = XMMatrixRotationRollPitchYaw (0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f);
XMMATRIX translationMat = XMMatrixTranslation (x, y, 0.0f );
XMMATRIX worldMat = rotationMat * translationMat;
    /*XMMATRIX worldMat = XMMatrixIdentity( );*/
worldMat = XMMatrixTranspose( worldMat );

Another idea was to use a polymorphic method related to different programming languages. Another was to use physics functions and binary code in some form of tribal art. I still have yet to find something I am sold on...

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I think it is a horrible idea. Not the idea of a tattoo, but that specific series.

Side note - historical threads on tattoos.

If you want to represent mathematical constructs on your body like that...

Go with something more classic. Like the mathematical symbols for a matrix.

This image only contains transforming 2D points by 2d transform matrices. You may want 3d transform matrices which would be a 4x4 matrix.

If you don't know anything about the mathematical construct of a matrix... I'd avoid it all together.

This will inevitably end up something similar to the asian characters that you're told mean courage or strength, but really mean idiot or moron.

I thought getting permanent ink embedded in your flesh was all about making a statement that's personal to you. Asking a forum of anonymous strangers seems like you'd be deviating from the formula a bit.

That said, gaming iconography will come and go. One day, you'll find you need to explain some silly cartoony character because nobody will recall what it was. That wouldn't be cool irony BTW.

I'll throw in a suggestion though:

That there is the gold disc NASA affixed to the side of both Voyager spacecraft. They contain all kinds of universally deep meaning. Maybe that'll inspire you.

I couldn't find it but there was a list of programming terms a guy used. One of them being something along the lines of "yellow triangle", meaning an achievement that took a lot of work but isnt reconized because the outcome isn't significant.

This was because the guy who coined the term was a game dev working on a brand new game engine with his team, eventually leading them to cheering over a yellow triangle on a screen (meaning they could draw polygons) to which the non-programmers thought they were crazy/lazy.

So maybe you should get something that actually represents something other than some lines of code. That guy could get a tattoo of a yellow triangle to symbolize all of his unnoticed/unappreciated big achievements.

Sorry for any errors in my grammar, posting from mobile.

You should get
</head> at the top of your neck
and
<body> at the base of your neck.

No one has ever done that, you'll be really original :)

Make sure to put a band of tribal markings below each to underscore how awesome they are.

You guys remember that one dude over in the C# forum who was showing us the code he was going to put into his tattoo and it was so bad that it would surely never compile? It didn't even look like good code either.

If you are going to get a tattoo done of some code, make sure the stuff compiles because having some stupid function on your body and knowing it doesn't work is dumb to have for the rest of your life.

It would like me getting a tattoo of Mickey Mouse and then everyone who came up said "Oh look you have a tattoo of Goofy" Or to have your daughter's name, but it is misspelled.

:)

P.S. Make sure you are ok with the fact that some day you may have a tattoo that would be like having COBOL on your body now. Languages will eventually evolve and some die off.

That's why I said go with something classic, like existing math symbols.

It's less likely to die out. And if it even does, it'll still be recognizable since it was classic. Like Latin may be dead, but it's still recognizable and respected.

I'm with duct, he has the right of it. Classic math symbols and statements aren't going to antiquate the same way "#include <soul.h>" will

A game programming tattoo? Awful idea.

If you want something "classical" or in reference to development in general I would say the glider from the game of life is a great symbol that symbolizes all of development and the hacker sub culture.
