[Link] Securing Your Fresh, New Linux Server

Posted 04 March 2013 - 06:53 AM

This is an EXCELLENT post on what you need to do to secure your new Linux server "out-of-the-box".

Everyone new to Linux system administration should read this and implement it.

Nice checklist. The link is good for any linux box, not just a server. I've never messed with ufw before...

I'd get rid of NetworkManager; not only crap, but it breaks things. If you have a server box, with a static IP, that ain't going anywhere, kill it with fire.

Indeed, turning off services you don't use is a great way to improve both security and performance. I never have a machine plugged into a printer, but there CUPS is, cranking away.
